What is a CMR?

A Client Master Report (CMR), sometimes referred to as a Client Master List (CML), is an important document issued by your depository participant (DP) that contains all the key details of your Demat account.
It is typically provided as a digitally signed PDF and serves as a certificate of ownership and identification for your account.
According to guidelines from both CDSL and NSDL, a digitally signed CMR is considered as valid as a physical copy for these kinds of transactions.
For investors, keeping a copy of their CMR and reviewing it periodically helps ensure smoother investment operations and avoids disruptions in account activity.

Uses of CMR

✅ Verify and Update Personal Details

Your CMR copy lists key information like your name, contact details, PAN, and address. Regularly reviewing it ensures that any updates—like a change in phone number or address—are reflected accurately. In case of discrepancies, you can request corrections through your Depository Participant (DP).

✅ Confirm Bank Account Details

The CMR includes your bank account information registered with your DP. Cross-checking it against your bank statement ensures your payouts, refunds, and dividends are credited to the correct account.

✅ Track Investment Holdings

Your CMR acts like a snapshot of your investment portfolio. It helps you:
  • Monitor asset performance
  • Identify underperforming securities
  • Align investments with your financial goals

✅ Identify Inactive Demat Accounts

The report clearly mentions the status of your account—active or inactive. If your account is inactive, you can take steps to reactivate or close it, avoiding unnecessary fees or risks.

✅ Use in Transactions & Off-Market Transfers

Whenever you initiate a transfer—especially off-market transfers—your CMR acts as a reliable source of truth. It reduces chances of manual errors and miscommunication during securities movement between accounts.

✅ For Loan and Credit Applications

Lenders may ask for your CMR copy while processing loan or credit applications. It acts as a certificate of your financial holdings, helping assess your creditworthiness.

✅ Tax Filing and Capital Gains

During tax season, your CMR copy can simplify the process of reporting investments. It helps you accurately declare:
  • Capital gains/losses
  • Dividend income
  • Other investment-related tax details

✅ Support in Account Linking

If you're opening a new trading account or switching brokers, the CMR copy allows for smooth linking with your existing Demat account. It contains all the consolidated information needed to set up and verify the link.
Regulatory bodies and financial institutions use your CMR for compliance checks. It ensures your holdings are legitimate and aligned with applicable laws—protecting against fraud or unauthorized activity.

Contents of CMR

The CMR contains comprehensive information, including personal information (such as your Demat ID, name, date of birth, address, email ID, mobile number), bank account details, demat account details, and nominee information. It also indicates whether your account is active or inactive. This document plays a crucial role in ensuring that all your account-related information is accurate and up to date.

➡️ DP ID

Depository Participant (DP) ID is a unique number assigned to your broker by the depository—either NSDL or CDSL. This ID helps identify where your Demat account is held.

➡️ Client ID

Your Client ID is a unique identification number given to you by your broker. Together with the DP ID, it forms your complete Demat account number.

➡️ Account Status

Indicates whether your Demat account is currently active or inactive.

➡️ Account Opening Date

The date your Demat account was officially opened.

➡️ Account Closure Date

If your account has been permanently closed, this field shows the closure date.

➡️ BO Status

BO (Beneficial Owner) Status refers to the type of account holder. It indicates whether the account is held by an Individual, Company, HUF, Trust, or another entity.

➡️ BO Sub-Status

Further classifies the account holder. For instance, if the BO status is “Individual,” the sub-status could be Resident or NRI.

➡️ Account Type

This field identifies the category of Demat account:
  • Regular Demat Account – For Indian residents
  • Repatriable Demat Account – For NRIs; allows funds to be transferred abroad
  • Non-Repatriable Demat Account – For NRIs; does not allow fund repatriation

➡️ Nationality

Shows whether the account holder is a Resident or NRI. For NRIs, the broker ensures compliance with RBI and FEMA guidelines.

➡️ Statement Cycle

Specifies how often you’ll receive transaction statements—monthly, quarterly, etc.—based on your selected preference.

➡️ Freeze Status

Indicates whether your account is temporarily frozen, meaning no transactions can be carried out. This usually occurs due to legal or regulatory reasons.

➡️ Personal Details

Includes basic personal information provided by you:
  • Name(s) of the account holder(s)
  • PAN number(s)
  • Date(s) of birth
  • Occupation
  • Address (correspondence and permanent)
  • Contact details (phone number and email)

➡️ BSDA Flag

If your account is classified as a Basic Services Demat Account (BSDA) under CDSL guidelines, this field will be marked as ‘Yes’. Otherwise, it will show ‘No’.

➡️ Bank Details

Lists your registered bank account information, such as:
  • Bank name
  • Account number
  • Account type
  • IFSC and MICR codes
  • ECS (Electronic Clearing Service) flag

➡️ Nominee Details

If you’ve appointed a nominee, their name and address will be shown here. In case the nominee is a minor, the guardian’s details will also be mentioned.

➡️ Power of Attorney (PoA) Details

This section reflects whether you’ve authorized your broker to act on your behalf for share transactions. It includes:
  • Broker’s name
  • Master ID
  • Reference number
